Snorkelling is one of those plans that gets a lot better from a boat. From the beach you swim out as far as you can and the sandy bottom doesn’t give you much to look at. But the coast between Cambrils, Salou and l’Ametlla is full of rocky-bottomed coves that are really only reachable by sea: you anchor right on top, lean over with your mask, and suddenly there’s life, rock, seagrass and fish a couple of metres down.
What you’ll see underwater
Don’t expect a tropical reef, but you’ll find a living Mediterranean seabed and, on the good days, very clear water. In the rocky coves along this coast it’s common to see:
- Salema, sea bream and damselfish moving in shoals among the rocks.
- Posidonia seagrass meadows, where most of the smaller fish hide.
- Octopus and starfish if you look into the gaps and the low-rock areas.
- Patches of white sand that give the water its turquoise colour when the sun comes through.
The less the swell stirs up the bottom, the more you see. That’s why the rocky coves, more sheltered, tend to offer the best visibility in the area.
The best seabeds are reached by boat
Many of the best snorkelling spots have no easy access on foot, or are so far out that swimming from the beach isn’t worth it. By boat it’s a different plan: you cruise the coast for a while, pick the best-looking cove of the day and anchor a few metres from the rocky bottom. The boat stays right there as your base: dive in, swim, climb back up to rest and grab some water, repeat.
We’ll point you to the exact spot for the day and the visibility, so you don’t waste time searching.
La Bond: snorkelling with no licence, close to the coast
For a relaxed day of snorkelling our pick is La Bond. It’s a 4-metre boat with a 15 HP engine, so you take her out with no boating licence: you just need your ID and to be of legal age. Before you set off we run through the basics and the good area for the day.
La Bond is built for exactly this: cruising close to the coast, finding your cove, anchoring and swimming off the deck. Up to 5 people on board and fuel is included, so there are no surprises. Perfect for a family or a group of friends who want an easy day on the water.
Gear and extras you take along
Snorkel gear is available as an extra, so you don’t have to bring anything. And the trip already includes the essentials:
- Insurance (SOVI + civil liability) and safety gear.
- A cooler to keep water and fruit cold between swims.
- Nautical map and sun shade for shade.
- Want more to do in the water? Add a paddleboard to the snorkel gear.
In short
The best snorkelling seabeds on the Costa Daurada are in the rocky coves you reach by sea. With La Bond you get there with no licence, anchor over the good bottom and spend the day in and out of the water. You take the snorkel gear as an extra and the Mediterranean does the rest.
