When people discover they can rent a boat without a licence, the next question is always the same: “and how far can I actually go with that?” The answer surprises almost everyone: much further than you’d think, and more than enough for a full day at sea.
The rule that sets your range
With no boating licence you can operate a motorboat of up to 15 HP and 5 metres in length, always by day and staying within 2 nautical miles of a harbour or sheltered spot. That’s about 3.7 kilometres out to sea, measured from the nearest shelter.
And here’s the key: those 2 miles aren’t measured only from Cambrils. Every harbour and sheltered stretch along the coast resets the count. As you move along the shoreline you keep picking up new points of shelter, so in practice you can cover a good stretch of coast while always staying inside what’s allowed.
The stretch of Costa Daurada you cover from Cambrils
Leaving the Club Nàutic de Cambrils, you have a generous coastline within reach:
- Heading north, towards Salou: the Cap Salou coves, with several rocky spots and clear water to anchor in.
- Heading south, towards l’Ametlla de Mar: quieter stretches of coast where you’ll almost always find a place to drop anchor.
- Right off Cambrils itself: open water to cruise, cut the engine and swim without having gone far at all.
With La Bond the idea isn’t to chase the horizon — it’s to cruise at your own pace, find your spot and anchor. And for that, the range the law gives you is more than enough.
Where to anchor and swim off the boat
The plan that works best is simple: cruise for a while, pick a cove or a patch of calm water, drop anchor and swim straight off the deck. A few of the spots we point out to people who head out with us:
- The Cap Salou coves, the closest ones, with a pretty seabed for putting on a mask.
- Patches of open water off Cambrils, ideal if you’re with kids and want something easy.
- Quieter corners further south when you fancy a day with fewer boats around.
We hand you a nautical map with the recommended area of the day marked, based on the conditions. It’s part of the briefing we give you before you set off.
What’s NOT included (and why you won’t miss it)
For the full picture, here’s what a no-licence boat doesn’t cover:
- Sailing at night: trips are always by day.
- Going many miles offshore: this is a coastal plan, not a crossing.
- Crossing to far-off destinations: for that you’re into a different kind of boat and licence.
None of this takes anything away. The product is exactly the opposite: a day of cruising near the coast, anchoring and swimming, with no paperwork and no stress. And on that turf, the room you have is huge.
And if you want more range
If one day you want to reach further coves or go faster, that’s where La Niña comes in, our 80 HP Quicksilver 505. You drive if you hold the licence, or you book with a professional skipper and enjoy without driving. But for most days, La Bond and its no-licence range cover exactly what people are after.
