There’s an hour of the day when the Costa Daurada lives up to its name. As the sun drops, the light turns warm, the sea settles, and the coastline between Cambrils, Salou and l’Ametlla takes on the golden tone the coast is named for — and it lasts only a short while. Heading out right then, anchoring in a cove and slipping into the water while the sky changes colour is one of the simplest and most memorable things you can do here.

Why sunset feels different from the water

From land you watch the sunset head-on. From a boat at anchor you’re inside it: the reflection on the water, the shifting light on the cliffs, the quiet once the rest of the boats have headed back to port. The temperature drops a notch, the wind usually eases, and the sea goes calmer than it was at midday.

It’s also the best time for a swim. The water is still warm from a full day of sun, and swimming off the deck with the golden light behind you is nothing like doing it at a packed beach at two in the afternoon.

Where and when to go

The right window depends on the time of year, but the idea is the same: head out a couple of hours before sunset so you have time to cruise, pick your cove and enjoy it without rushing.

  • Spring and autumn: the sun sets early, so you leave mid-afternoon. Soft light, few people on the water.
  • Summer: long sunsets, around nine. You leave after the midday heat, just as the coast begins to empty.

The coast between Cambrils and l’Ametlla de Mar is dotted with small coves angled so the sun drops right onto the sea horizon. We’ll point you to the exact spot for the day and the conditions, so you anchor in good shelter with the best view.

La Niña: the boat for this trip

For sunset our pick is La Niña, the 80 HP Quicksilver 505. She moves with ease, so you can go a little further and choose whichever cove you fancy without thinking about distance. Five metres of length, up to 5 people, and plenty of deck to stretch out in the last of the sun.

La Niña requires a boating licence. If you hold one, you take the helm. If you don’t, you can book her with a professional skipper on board (+€150): we handle the helm, take you to the best cove of the day, and you just watch the sky. Fuel is separate on this boat.

What’s included

Whether you go with a skipper or on your own, the trip includes everything to round off the plan:

  • Insurance (SOVI + civil liability) and safety gear.
  • A cooler to keep drinks cold and a bite to eat for the moment.
  • Nautical map and sun shade for the early hours.
  • Want to stretch out the swim? Add snorkel gear or a paddleboard as an extra.

In short

Sunset by boat on the Costa Daurada isn’t a luxury or a hassle: it’s heading out at the right hour, anchoring in a quiet cove and swimming as the sun goes down. La Niña takes you further, with a skipper if you don’t have a licence, and the light does the rest.
