Punta de la Mora is one of the secrets of the Tarragona coast. It’s a small protected natural area, a pine-covered point leaning out to sea between Tarragona and Altafulla, with sheltered coves and, crowning it all, the Torre de la Mora: a 16th-century watchtower that guarded these waters for centuries. It’s hard to reach properly by land; from the boat it appears whole, the tower cut out against the green and the blue.
It’s an outing with a different character from the better-known coves: here the appeal is the quiet cruise along the coast, stopping for a swim in still water and, if you like, staying until the sun goes down.
What you’ll see
The run along Punta de la Mora combines natural coast, history and calm swimming:
- The Torre de la Mora. The old watchtower is the landmark of the whole headland. From the water you see it whole, commanding the point among the pines, and you understand why it was built right there.
- Sheltered coves. The natural area holds small coves that are far easier to reach by sea. You anchor in front of them, drop the hook and swim straight off the deck, away from the crowds.
- A pine-forest coast. Unlike the urban beaches, the coast here is green and low, with the pine wood reaching almost to the water. A wilder, quieter landscape.
A relaxed cruise… or a sunset
Punta de la Mora works very well two ways. As a relaxed half-day cruise: you run along the coast, stop for a swim in a cove and come back at leisure. Or, better still, as a sunset outing: you drift into the area late in the day, anchor off the coast and watch the sun drop over the sea with the tower behind it. It’s one of those simple plans that stays with you.
For this outing we use La Niña, our 80 HP Quicksilver 505. She has the range to reach the Tarragona coast comfortably and move easily among the coves of the point.
La Niña requires a boating licence. If you hold one, you drive. If you don’t, you can book it with a professional skipper on board (an extra): we handle the navigation and choose the best spot for a swim or for the sunset, and you just enjoy it.
How to plan the day
A few ideas to make the Punta de la Mora outing land just right:
- Decide: cruise or sunset. If you want swimming and calm, go mid-morning or in the afternoon. If you’re after the sunset, we time the departure to put you off the coast at the right moment.
- Bring snorkel gear. The coves of the point have rocky bottoms full of life; we’ll add snorkel gear as an extra if you like.
- Pack an extra layer for the sunset. It cools down on the water once the sun drops; with something warm, the moment is far better.
- Prepare a picnic or a light supper. The boat comes with a cooler, ideal for a sunset with something good on board.
As always, the essentials are included: insurance, safety gear, a cooler, a nautical chart and a sun shade.
In short
Punta de la Mora is the quiet, natural face of the Tarragona coast: pines, sheltered coves and a watchtower with centuries of history, away from the bustle of the urban beaches. By boat you enjoy it as a relaxed cruise or as a sunset at sea, aboard La Niña — you at the helm if you hold a licence, or with a skipper if not.
